In 2012, Greece participated for the third consecutive time in a UEFA Euro tournament. Euro 2012 was co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine with the Greek national team participating in Group A in Poland.
In Group A, Greece faced hosts Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia. Greece was coached by Fernando Santos, who led them to a major tournament for the first time since the time of Otto Rehhagel. The tournament opened on 8 June with the Poland-Greece match being the first of Euro 2012. Poland took the lead with a goal by Lewandowski in the 17th minute, but Greece equalized with Salpingidis in the 51st minute. The Greek team had a chance to win when Poland goalkeeper Szeszny tripped Salpingidis, awarded him a penalty and was sent off. Karagounis missed and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the secondth matchday, Greece played the Czech Republic. The Czechs took an early 2-0 lead, with goals from Jiráček and Pilař in the first quarter. Gekas reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, but Greece failed to do much more, suffering defeat.
Thus, qualification would be decided in the third game against Russia. Greece was only looking for a win while Russia qualified as second even with a draw. Karagounis' goal in the first half injury time was decisive. Greece led 1-0 and managed to hold the score until the end, while Tzavelas also hit the post in the second half. However, the card received by Karagounis was enough to deprive him of participation in the next game.
The Czech Republic finished first in Group A with 6 points, while Greece was ahead in the tie with 4 points and qualified as second. In the quarter-finals, their opponent was Germany. The Germans scored through Lahm in the 39th minute, but Samaras' goal in the 55th minute brought the game into balance. However, Germany scored three more goals, through Khedira, Klose, and Reus, while Salpingidis' penalty in the 90th minute reduced the score to 4-2, which was the final score.
Greece wore a particularly beautiful jersey with a distinctive cross on the left side. In the four games of the tournament, they wore the white twice and the blue twice, while the players had the option of wearing the techfit jersey, which was particularly tight, or the formotion version. In the opening match against Poland, Greece wore blue with Kostas Fortounis coming off the bench and putting in an excellent performance. From his own cross, Salpingidis found himself in an advantageous position, winning the penalty and Szegny's dismissal. This is one of Kostas Fortounis' jerseys from that game. In addition to the patches on the sleeves, the match details printed below the badge are also characteristic and make this jersey one off.
