Ο Πανιώνιος, ως Κυπελλούχος Ελλάδος 1998, συμμετείχε στο Κύπελλο Κυπελλούχων της σεζόν 1998-1999. Οι «κυανέρυθροι» απέκλεισαν κατά σειρά την Φινλανδική Χάκα και τον Απόλλων Λεμεσού από την Κύπρο, κάνοντας μόνο νίκες εντός και εκτός έδρας. Στα προημιτελικά βρέθηκαν αντιμέτωποι με την πανίσχυρη Λάτσιο. Στον πρώτο αγώνα, στη Νέα Σμύρνη, η Λάτσιο επικράτησε με 0-4. Στον επαναληπτικό ο Πανιώνιος άντεξε για 70 λεπτά. Από εκεί και έπειτα, όμως, δέχτηκε τρία γκολ και ηττήθηκε με 3-0.

Panionios wore the specific jersey design for two seasons. In the 1997-1998 season, when they won the Greek Cup, Panionios wore the same jersey sponsored by the electrical goods company "Elephant". The following season, the "NOKIA" sponsor was used in several games. In the European games of "Historic" there was no sponsor and of course the names of the players were written in English characters. This jersey was worn in the European games of Panionios by Thanasis Gazis, including in the game with Lazio in Nea Smyrni where the defender of the "blue and reds" scored an own goal.
