In 2005 Greece participated once again in FIVB World League. In a difficult group with Poland, Serbia-Montenegro and Argentina, Greece finished in third place with 17 points (5 wins and 7 losses), behind Poland (21 points) and Serbia-Montenegro (19 points). The teams that won the first place in the groups were Cuba, Brazil and Poland and together with Serbia-Montenegro which was the host of the Final 4 won the trophy. Brazil, after prevailing 3-1 over Cuba in the semifinals, also defeated Serbia-Montenegro in the final 3-1 and won the trophy. Greece in the final ranking was in 7th place.
A few weeks later, Greece also competed in the European Championship, which was co-organized in Rome and Belgrade. Against Spain, Serbia-Montenegro, France, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, Greece had a very good presence that in the end was not crowned with success in the details. The 3-1 defeat by Spain proved to be decisive for Greece and Spain tied at 8 points (behind Serbia-Montenegro which had 10 points) and in the end Spain prevailed in the tie. The winner of the tournament was Italy, which defeated Russia 3-2 in the final in Rome.
Greece had a very strong roster with the leader, Marios Giourdas, and many stars of that period such as Baev, Tsakiropoulos, Kournetas, Roumeliotis and others. This jersey was worn by the middle-blocker of the national team and Olympiakos, Antonis Tsakiropoulos, in both tournaments of 2005. Greece, as usual, used a white, a dark blue and a light blue shirt while it was one of the few years that it used sleeveless jerseys.
