Panathinaikos did not do well in the 1999-2000 season. Under Serbian coach Dragan Mihailovic, the Greens' goal was to win the championship and the cup. However, in the championship, Panathinaikos was left behind and finishing 7th in the regular season with Olympiakos being first and Iraklis second. This led Panathinaikos to face Iraklis in the quarterfinals and even with a home court disadvantage.
In the quarterfinals, Iraklis was superior and with two victories (3-0 and 1-3) qualified for the next phase. Iraklis reached the finals where finally lost the title to Olympiakos.
In the Greek Cup, after initially overcoming the obstacle of Filia Ilioupoli, Panathinaikos found AEK on its way on quarterfinal. AEK won 3-0 at home and left the greens out of Final 4. AEK was defeated in the semifinal by Iraklis who won the Cup against Olympiakos in the final.
Anton Kovachev came from Bulgaria to Greece in 1990 on behalf of the Ionikos N.F. After a transfer from Ktisifon Paianias he became player of Panathinaikos from 1993 to 2000 with an intermediate transfer from Napoli in 1997-1998. Although he came to Greece as opposite he became outside hitter and was one of the best players of Panathinaikos and the league. After a long presence in Greece, he acquired Greek citizenship and played in the Greek national team 93 times. This jersey was worn in the 1999-2000 championship by Antonis Kovachev. It is characteristic, as in most jerseys of that time, that it was very thick and heavy but nevertheless it is a characteristic and beautiful design of Le Coq Sportif of that period.
