The 2005-2006 season for Panathinaikos started with ambitions and high goals. The team was coached by the Italian Alberto Malezani while the two most interesting transfers of the summer were the signings of Flavio Conceição and the 2005 European champion with Liverpool Igor Biscan.

The leader and captain of Panathinaikos was Argentinian Equi Gonzalez in his third season with the team. At the beginning of the season, Panathinaikos eliminated Wisla Krakow and qualified for the Champions League groups. With one win, one draw and four losses, Panathinaikos finished fourth behind Barcelona, Werder Bremen and Udinese.

In the Greek championship, Panathinaikos had no stability. Although the greens achieved important victories such as the two victories against PAOK or the one against AEK at home, they were hurt by the two defeats by Olympiakos (0-2 in the league premiere and 3-2 in Karaiskakis Stadium), from 3-0 in home of AEK but also the defeat by Iraklis with 1-0 in Thessaloniki which largely decided the championship. Equi Gonzalez was the leading player of that year for Panathinaikos. The Argentine scored 5 goals while being decisive in most games of the season. The main difference compared to the shirt worn in the Champions League apart from the patch on the sleeve is that the OTE sponsor on the back only existed in the Greek league.
