Until 1950, Brazil wore the white jersey as its first jersey. The defeat by Uruguay and the loss of the World Cup in 1950 changed this fact as the white jersey was considered cursed and the colors of Rio (yellow and green) became the colors of the national team to "wash away the shame" and honor with in this way the city of Rio which they hurt with the loss of that World Cup. The blue jersey had been introduced as an alternative.

In the grand final of Maracana, Brazil took a 3-1 victory over Peru and won the 9^th Copa America in its history.
