1992-1993 was the first year of the UEFA Champions League which essentially upgraded the European Champions Cup. The teams in round of 8 found themselves for the first time in a group stage. Two groups of four teams were formed and the first team from each group would advance to the final.

Marseille was in the group with Rangers, Bruges and CSKA Moscow. The French champions with 3 wins and 3 draws were in first place in the group. On the other hand, Milan, against Gothenburg, Porto and Eindhoven, made six victories and also qualified.

In the final in Munich, the strong Milan was the favorite. However, Marseille took the lead with a goal by Boli in the 43rd minute and kept it 1-0 until the end. Marseille became the first French team to win the most important European trophy. However, Marseille were relegated to the second division the following year due to an attempt to bribe a Valenciennes’ player in the French league. The 1993 French title was taken away from Marseille but not the European title, although Milan replaced it in the FIFA World Clubs Cup.

This jersey is similar to the one worn in the final in Munich in 1993 as unlike the French championship there was no sponsor. The number 11 was worn in the final, and for most of the season, by the team's captain, Didier Deschamps, who became the youngest captain to lift the European Cup until then.
