In the 2012-2013 season, Panathinaikos participated in the UEFA Europa League group stage with opponents Tottenham, Lazio and Maribor. The greens, in a special season with administrative instability, did badly in both the Greek Super League and the Europa League.

Nevertheless, the victory over Maribor in Athens and also the 1-1 draws with Tottenham and Lazio in OAKA kept the hopes of Panathinaikos until the last match of the Europa League. Panathinaikos wanted only victory in the away game against Tottenham but the final 3-1 gave the qualification to the team of London leaving the greens 3^rds with 5 points.

Panathinaikos wore the white shirt only once in the Europa League that season, in the away game against Maribor. However, because Panathinaikos was sponsored by OPAP and because betting companies were banned in Slovenia, the jersey of that match had no sponsor. This particular jersey was intended to be worn but in the end it was not worn. It is indicative that the OPAP logo is smaller than the jerseys worn in the Super League, in order to be in the dimensions set by UEFA for the European competitions. Ibrahim Sissoko was the main winger of Panathinaikos for most of the season and was one of the players who stood out.
