After several years, the Greek national team participated in basketball World Cup qualifiers. The new qualifying system forced all teams to participate in the qualifiers.

The World Cup qualifiers took place during the season with the paradox that the organization of the Euroleague did not stop on the dates of the matches of the national teams. As a result, players who had obligations to Euroleague teams did not play in the national teams. Thus, many opportunities were given to players, many of whom did not have participations with their national team.

In the first round, Greece faced Great Britain, Israel and Estonia and made it 6/6, with the victory over Great Britain in the first match standing out. In the second round, Greece, Israel and Estonia met Germany and Serbia. Greece was defeated only away from Serbia and with 11 wins and 1 loss reacord took the first place and the qualification to the World Cup in China.

Vaggelis Margaritis, as a player of PAOK, was one of the players who stood out in this course. He played in all the qualifying games even though he was not a member of the national team in the World Cup. The design of this jersey may have been worn at Eurobasket 2017 but the specific version, with the patch of the World Cup qualifiers, was worn only in the 12 qualifying games. This jersey was used by Vaggelis Margaritis in several of these games.
