Milan had an great roster in the 2008-2009 season as Ronaldinho and Pato were added to the team leaders who led them to the Champions League in 2007, while Shevchenko returned and Beckham was loaned out in the middle of the season. Nevertheless, the Rossoneri were left behind in the standings and eventually finished in 3th place, 10 points behind champions Inter.
In European competitions, Milan played in the UEFA Cup as they had finished 5th in Serie A last season. Although Milan was the big favorite in the UEFA Cup, they was eliminated early after in the Round of after two draws with Werder Bremen (1-1 in Bremen and 2-2 in Milan). Werder, on the other hand, reached the final in Istanbul but was defeated by Shakhtar.
Ronaldinho scored 10 goals in 32 appearances in the 2008-2009 season. However, the Brazilian most of the time came from the bench as his physical condition was not ideal. In most of his games he used to wear the long-sleeved Milan jersey. Milan had won the Club World Cup in December 2007 and so until December 2008 it had the patch of world champions on its shirt, on the right side of its chest. Also under the badge was written in gold letters "il club piu titolato al mondo" which means "the most successful team in titles in the world". This was based on the recognition by FIFA that Milan was the team with the most international titles in the world as until then it counted 7 Champions League or Champions Cups, 2 Cup Winners' Cups, 5 European Super Cups but also 3 Intercontinental and 1 Club World Cup.
