Olympiacos started the 2016-2017 season as the big favorite to win the championship for another one season. With Takis Lemonis as coach, the red and whites started impressively. In the first 20 games they had 16 wins, 3 draws and just one defeat.
Having a big difference from the other teams followed a period of relaxation as they lost in all three major derbies away from home, with AEK, PAOK and Panathinaikos, but even so they reached the championship with 67 points while the second PAOK had 61.
In the Greek Cup, Olympiakos reached the semifinals. There Olympiakos was eliminated by AEK after losing 1-2 to Georgios Karaiskakis and despite the 0-1 victory in OAKA he did not manage to get the “ticket” for the final. In European competitions, Olympiakos was eliminated by Hapoel Beer Sheva in the Champions League qualifiers and led to the Europa League. There qualified as second, behind APOEL and above Young Boys and Astana. Olympiakos initially eliminated Osmanlispor in the Round of 32 but failed to do the same with Besiktas. In the round of 16, they first drew 1-1 with the Turkish champions and then lost at the Vodafone Arena in Istanbul 4-1.
Nigerian Ideye Brown was one of Olympiacos' best players that season. He scored 13 goals in Super League, 1 in the Cup and 1 in the Europa League in the 2016-2017 season while he had a total of 30 appearances. This jersey was worn in Greek competitions. During this period, no patch was used by the Super League on the sleeves. On the back of the jersey there is the logo of Unicef as Olympiakos in collaboration with the said organization made donations and at the same time supported this charitable organization with various actions.
