The group stage of Eurobasket 2017 was organized by Romania, Finland, Turkey and Israel. The final phase of the knockout matches took place in Istanbul and the Sinan Erdem Arena.

Russia may not have emerged as one of the favorites and found itself in Group D against Serbia, Latvia, Belgium, the United Kingdom and host Turkey. The only defeat in the group was that of Latvia but the triple tie with 4 wins and 1 loss brought Serbia first, Latvia second and Russia third while Turkey qualified as fourth.

In the Round of 16 Russia was impressive and qualified against Croatia with 101-78. In the quarterfinals, it was faced with Greece. Although the Greek team had the lead until the third period, it was overthrown and with 74-69 Russia got the qualification. In the semifinals, Serbia proved to be superior and with 87-79 left Russia out of the final. However, Russia did not win a medal because of the defeat from Spain (93-85) in Bronze Medal match.

The main jersey of Russia was red with gold details while there was no national emblem but only the flag of the country. Alexey Shved was the tournament's top scorer with an average of 24.3 points and was a member of the tournament's top five along with Luka Doncic, Goran Dragic, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Pau Gasol.
