At Euro 2016, Iceland made its first appearance in a major event. Coached by the Swede Lars Lagerbäck, Iceland was in Group F along with Portugal, Austria and Hungary. The Icelanders impressed as they drew with Portugal and Hungary while in the 3^th match they beat Austria. With 5 points they were in second place, equal to Hungary and advanced to the round of 16.

In the next round they faced the very strong England in Nice. The English were ahead with a penalty by Rooney in the 4th minute. However, the Icelanders were impressive and after equalizing with R. Sigurðsson in the 6' and made the upset with a goal by Sigþórsson in the 18'. England failed to comeback and were eliminated by the rookie Icelanders.

The quarterfinals were even more difficult as the opponent was the host France. At the Stade de France in Paris, the French led 4-0 at halftime. The final score was 5-2 and somehow ended the journey of the Icelanders who won the love of the fans while leaving as a memory their characteristic celebration after each game, the shout of the Vikings.

Iceland wore the blue jersey in 3 of the 5 games of Euro 2016, with Hungary, Austria and England. The historic first jersey at a major event was inspired by the shirts worn by the protagonists of the movie "Escape to Victory" with the characteristic double vertical stripe. Aron Gunnarsson was the team captain in this tournament with participation in all games as a starter and played at Euro 2016 as a Cardiff City player.
