In 2016, the Greek national team performed very well in the European League, something that did not happen in the qualifiers of the European Championship. However, the presence in the Final 4 of the European League was an important success for the team of Yiannis Kalmazidis.

Greece was in Group C of the European League and despite losing twice to Slovenia managed to beat Romania and Hungary with clean sheets twice. This resulted in Slovenia being first in the group and Greece second with 12 points. Greece qualified for the Final 4 as the best runner-up of the three groups along with Azerbaijan, Slovakia and Slovenia. In the double semi-finals, Greece faced the powerful Azerbaijan, which was also the host. The home team prevailed 3-1 in both games and then took the gold medal by defeating Slovakia 3-1 and 3-0.

A few months later, in September 2016, Greece participated in the European Championship qualifiers. In a group with Belarus, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, Greece suffers 6 defeats and failed to qualify for the major event.

Olga Strantzali was a member of the national team that summer. The then young outside hitter, who at that time was competing in the US College Championship with the University of Miami, despite being young, got time to participate in both the European League and the European Championship Qualifiers. Zeus dressed the national team for the second consecutive year, creating a particularly beautiful jersey. Its characteristic was the cross formed in the part of the heart behind the coat of arms.
