A very good season which however did not bring any title for Olympiakos in 2001-2002. The red and whites played in the finals of two tournaments without ultimately being able to lift a trophy.

In the Greek championship, Olympiacos was first in the regular season. Having made 19 wins and 3 losses, as many as Panathinaikos and Iraklis, reds had the lead as they had more clean wins and a better score. In the playoffs it eliminated Olympiada Patras and Orestiada and reached the finals. Having a home advantage against Iraklis, the two teams won at home in the first games, as a result of which the series was led to a fifth game in Rentis. There, Iralkis won 2-3 and managed to win the championship.

In the Greek Cup, Olympiacos was eliminated in the round of 16 by Aris. However, in the Champions League, Piraeus made an excellent run and reached the Final 4 of Opole in Poland. In the semi-final they eliminated the Polish ZASKA (Mostostal Azoty as it was called then) and in the final they met the Italian Macerata. Macerata won 3-1 and took the trophy, leaving Olympiakos in second place.

Olympiacos used three kits that season, one all red, one all white and this red with white on the top half. Basically this jersey was worn by Hernan Gomez in league and cup games. Gomez was the main opposite of Olympiakos who had come to Greece a season before and then played for many more years in three more Greek teams winning 5 championships and 2 Cups.
